UN rights experts say Britain is systematically breaching the rights of disabled people through its cost-cutting welfare reforms.
The UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities says it has reliable evidence showing grave or systematic violations of the rights of disabled in the UK. The British government has been persuing controversial reforms for the past six years, aimed at cutting the deficit including austerity cuts to disability benefits. In a report, the UN committee said such measures had a negative impact on a large number of people. It has also urged London to take steps to fight any discriminatory stereotypes or prejudice. London has flatly rejected the UN report saying the reforms helped the disabled people to lead more independent lives and participate more fully in society.
