DOJ shutting down ‘unsafe’ private prisons

The Department of Justice (DOJ) has announced that it plans to end its use of private prison facilities after concluding the facilities are less safe than government-run prisons. The DOJ says it will decline to renew existing for-profit prison contracts. For more, the director of advocacy for The Sentencing Project, Nicole D. Porter, joins RT America’s Ashlee Banks and says the conditions at private prisons are poor because they are mostly concerned with their “bottom line” and “corners were cut in terms of labor, employee training, healthcare, food and in-prison programming” at for-profit prisons.
