Dear Mr Cameron,
In a world where the rich are getting astronomically richer and the poor desperately poorer, once again you deal with poverty by imposing greater hardship on the poor. Instead of making any attempt to raise incomes for the poorest, you take more money from them.
By cutting council tax aid for the poor you are increasing hardship, debt, distress and the risk of the loss of possessions, homes and liberty and of criminalizing the entirely innocent whose only ‘crime’ is that of being poor.
When you were appointed as a chairman by UN secretary general, Ban Ki-moon, in 2012 to address poverty, you said, “We have the unique opportunity to be the generation that will eradicate extreme poverty.” Since then we have witnessed the most ferocious and feral attacks on the poor eradicating protections in law, in the social safety net and in ideological policies designed to punish the poor for the temerity of being poor.
The poor are the whipping post of austerity and are being demonised and hounded, literally to death in many cases, which your government and the DWP in particular refuse to acknowledge, deliberately withholding the death rates from public scrutiny.
Interesting to note that the American Psychiatric Association has invented a new disorder, “oppositional defiant disorder” or ODD, defined as an ‘ongoing pattern of disobedient, hostile and defiant behaviour,’ symptoms include questioning authority, negativity, defiance, argumentativeness, and being easily annoyed.
Authority has a long tradition of hostility to being questioned and yet were there no people who ever dared to question it the world would still be flat and the entire universe would still revolve around the Earth. The American Psychiatric Association, can manufacture disorders to its hearts content, displaying Manufactured Anxiety Disorder, which, like the your government, is just MAD.
